December’s Member of the Month: Meet Sean Polk

I wanted to make a change in my life and focus more on my health and overall well-being. As a high schooler, I tend to struggle with anxiety and finding my voice in different situations. I was becoming emotionally and physically drained and ready for a change.

One afternoon, my Mom encouraged me to try the youth boot camp program offered at RevFit. As a member, she has had positive results and is always trying to encourage our family to follow in her footsteps. After the first week, I was hooked. Joining this program in March 2021 was the best decision I could’ve made for myself.

Under the guidance of all of my trainers, I’ve managed to lose a total of 42 pounds and 47 inches. I’ve become disciplined and consistent with my food choices and workouts.
It wasn’t easy by far, but each day, through the constant support I received from my fellow boot campers and trainers, I reached my goal and gained more confidence in myself. Through training, I have developed a new love for running and plan to pursue that at my school. I look forward to what the future has in store as I continue to reach the new goals I set for myself.

All my life I have always taken care of everyone around me, making sure they were fine and always putting myself on the back burner.

One day I woke up and told myself, “Everyone in your life is taken care of but you and you need to be selfish for once and focus on yourself.” I decided to join RevFit July 6, 2016 as a general member; my results were okay but not what I wanted for myself. I decided to step it up a notch and joined bootcamp with Candice, January 2017 and never looked back since. She helped push me beyond the limits I thought I had for myself. I learned how to discipline my mind and body in order for me to reach my goal(s). I met my goal weight of 162 lbs on October 3, 2017, and I knew there was no stopping from there.

Since then I have ran multiple 5k’s, 10k’s and half a marathon. I’ve learned that dedication and commitment will push you past the limits you “think” you can handle. My family and friends have been my biggest supporters, and I am forever indebted to them.

July of 2016, I let go of putting myself last and finally put myself, first and said hello to Me.

Here is a little advice to anyone struggling: It’s okay to be selfish and focus on YOU for once, the minute you take a chance on yourself, your life will change forever.

When RevFit moved to Carencro in 2015, It was obvious that there was something unique about the gym. I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I could see drastic physical changes in their members. This seemed to be a gym that achieved results, and I desperately wanted those results but I was also very skeptical.

At that time I was 45 years old, 25 pounds overweight, and the mother of 3 active children that I could not physically keep up with. I felt exhausted all the time. I felt unhappy the majority of the time with my appearance and my lack of stamina. I had tried & failed every diet plan on the market between 1992-2015, so I had lost and gained back the same 25 + pounds more times than I cared to remember.

I had also joined & left at least 10 different gyms between Baton Rouge, Lafayette, & Carencro.

So what were they doing at this new gym that was so different?

Surely it was just a gym that I would pay a hefty sign-up fee for, attend for 1 or 2 months then lose interest & leave feeling more frustrated and depressed than before, right?

It was with this attitude that I walked through the doors in July 2015 and met my  Boot Camp instructor , Kristan Leger. WOW! I quickly found out that this was no ordinary gym.

Kristan taught me about portion control, (I had never SEEN much less utilized food scale before) accountability ( #vest) & would add weight to the leg press when I was not looking! After 2-3 months of boot camp, she also demanded that I attend 1 of her spin classes! ( she did not give me an option)

Bootcamp was difficult! Weighing in was not comfortable at all. I hated it!! I kept telling myself that I could just follow old patterns and quit.

But I didn’t …

I didn’t quit because I realized I had become part of something special. Never before had a trainer called me when I missed a class. Never before did I feel a connection to the other members who had similar weight and food struggles. Never before had I belonged to a gym that seemed just as invested in me as I was in it.

So… I kept showing up and the pounds came off. 28 of them! The muscles started to show. Energy and confidence increased. My previous ideas about eating, weight loss, & exercise began to change. “Having “to exercise slowly changed into“ wanting” to exercise.

Friends, family, & office staff wanted to know what I was doing. They wanted to know what I ate ( what’s in your Tupperware today Rachel?)

In 2016 I had an added bonus when my oldest daughter, Olivia, wanted to join bootcamp with me. She was 16 at the time, and within 6 months she lost 60 pounds. She went on to become a certified bodypump trainer at 18 as well as a “crazy spin “ instructor & somehow convinced her mom to do the same! ( #motherdaughterspin). I consider teaching spin with my daughter as 1 of the most fulfilling things in my life.)

So here I am in 2021 at age 50 feeling stronger than I did at 45.

I’m grateful that Crystal and her team moved RevFit to Carencro. I’m grateful that despite my skepticism I walked through those doors in 2015. I’m grateful that I have been able to share a healthy lifestyle with my family and share my love of the spin bike with others. I am grateful for the way this gym community has enhanced my life.

Thank you!

Start Weight 310lbs in 2015—Current Weight 193lbs

My Journey Started in 2015. I was a skinny kid growing up. I never had a weight problem because I was always playing football, baseball, and basketball. I started working, partying, and eating out a lot after high school so I gained weight. The weight really crept up after I got married. I didn’t realize how much I had gained until I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and always fatigued. Even tying my shoes was exhausting. I was 310 pounds by 2015, so my wife and I decided to change.

We started our weight loss journey with diet, exercise, and a totally different mindset. I lost a total of 130 pounds that I have maintained for 6 years. I’ve learned what is good for my body when it comes to food and exercise. Louisiana is a hard place to lose weight and keep it off, but it becomes easier when your mind, body, and spirit are aligned. We joined RevFit in 2017, and we have built relationships with the members and staff. RevFit is a true “GYM” or as I like to say “FAMILY.”

Life is always going to get in the way of fitness and that little voice in our head will tell us it hurts, it’s too hard, it’s not worth all the hard work, etc. I’ve learned that it takes a place like RevFit and like-minded people to pick you back up and get back on track.

In my younger days, I never struggled or had issues with my weight. My mom always had me participate in extracurricular activities such as Football, Baseball etc.

When I entered Middle School, I wasn’t as interested in continuing those activities. I stopped playing sports; I found myself overeating, snacking, & playing the Game All Night Long. Throughout that time, my weight escalated. While attending a doctors appointment, it was mentioned to me & my mom that I needed to start making healthier choices by dieting & losing weight. For me that went in one ear and out the other.

In December of 2020, my mom decided to join RevFit Bootcamp to have a healthier lifestyle. Throughout her journey, I’ve watched her transition mentally, physically & emotionally while assisting her with meal prepping. At that time, I noticed that healthy eating wasn’t as bad as I thought.

My mom asked me several times if I was interested in joining. I declined each time because of my own fears and insecurities – not realizing that my insecurities were causing me not to enjoy & have a youthful life. Because of that, I never wanted to go to events & outings with family or friends.

In May of 2021 I attended another doctors appointment. Yes, I gained more weight. All my vitals were good but if I continued down this path it would lead to serious problems. That night me & my mom had a serious conversation, and I realized it was time for a change.

I finally agreed & my mom enrolled me in the Youth Bootcamp. My Journey then began and the transition to eating healthier & working out wasn’t that bad. I’m now 2 Months in & down 41 Pounds. I started out at 342 pounds and now at 301 Pounds. I’m more determined & motivated than ever.
I would like to Thank All My Trainers (Ms. Apphia, Ms. Crystal, Ms. Kristan, Ms. Alexis & Ms. Yvonne) and my Mom for pushing & instilling In me that no matter how hard the workouts are Never Give Up.
In their Words…
“Don’t Stop When You’re Tired, Stop When You’re Done”.

So as I continue my weight loss journey I’ll continue to give my best, believe in myself, challenge all limits & inspire others…

So here’s to another 5 years of building a better stronger me…

2021 marks my 5-year Fitness Journey …
Looking back at 2016, my daughter asked if I’d go with her to the gym (RevFit). She had a few friends that had joined and she said it would be FUN….
Knowing now that people will come and go on your journey and you just have to keep pushing yourself all the while keeping your goals insight…
Sure I made it to my first goal, (236 to 145) but getting my mindset and staying consistent … working through a few injuries and having to modify some of my workouts.. it’s all about balance and keep on upping your goals..
Thanks to all the trainers who believed in me when I couldn’t see myself changing the anxiety that most of us suffer with.. .
The struggle with feeling like I should be further along than what I am…
But you just keep going.. because you’re the only one in control of whether you continue to improve or not !!!
So here’s to another 5 years of building a better stronger me…

I started my journey almost two years ago. I awoke one morning tired of struggling to get up, tired of my body hurting, and tired of feeling like I didn’t sleep! I had a doctor’s appointment that morning and the scale showed that I weighed 300 pounds! I cried! I had to get it together! I have a daughter who needs me and she needs me at my best!
After researching some things I can do to get my weight loss started, I picked the JJ Smith smoothie cleanse. It is a 10-day plan of just smoothies and on that alone I lost 20 pounds. I started walking a couple of miles in my neighborhood also. After the cleanse, I knew I couldn’t stop. I had to keep it going. I joined a gym with small group classes and changed my bad eating habits. I remember my very first class and like most bigger people I was embarrassed, but I did it. I kept going and watched my body change.
In July 2019, I took my very first spin class at RevFit and it is all history from there! I was hooked! Yes it was horrible, but I did it and kept attending class! By July 2020 I had lost 70 pounds on my own, but I needed to step up my game, so I joined bootcamp with Apphia and Crystal. GAME CHANGER!
These women have turned on my beastmode! I look forward to my workouts and getting my butt kicked! I know now how to eat properly and eat for fuel, not just because. I never thought I would enjoy running! I get asked why I run races? What do you get out of it? My answer, “sis coming from 300 pounds you do not run for anything!” I have to prove to my old self that we can and will do it.
My total weight loss is 159 pounds, I would have never thought in my adult life I would weigh 141 pounds. I am so proud of myself and I feel I must encourage others that they can do it! It is hard absolutely but set small goals and focus on your best project…..YOU!
